About this Outdoor Garden

The Cow Lot—so named because it was once a pasture—is a sprawling and serene open lawn edged with stately copper beeches, beautiful Japanese flowering dogwoods, and graceful Paulownia trees.

Adjacent to the Cow Lot is a massive American elm—the lone survivor of an avenue of trees that succumbed to Dutch elm disease.

History of this Garden

The Cow Lot has changed over the years, including the loss of an “avenue of elms” that succumbed to Dutch elm disease and an allée of princess trees that had to be replaced due to their decline—but one thing has remained:  the pristine lawn that welcomes our guests as they first enter the Gardens.
